SOS asbestos: what is it and what can it cause?

Asbestos is a natural mineral belonging to the class of silicates. It is harmful to health due to its capacity to release fibres that may be inhaled and are responsible for serious and irreversible pathologies mainly affecting the lungs, in the form of asbestosis, lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma.

Nevertheless its technological properties have led to its widespread industrial use for the production of compact items, such as Asbestos-Cement also known as Eternit, as well as friable items.

The main health hazard concerns friable asbestos, which turns to dust in your hands. Compact asbestos does not tend to release fibres, unless it is sawn or scratched with the use of mechanical tools. Nonetheless, even a slight deterioration due to wear and atmospheric agents can be hazardous.
